Did you know that something sweet can also make your teeth healthier? Hint: Sorry it’s not actually sugar. It’s an ingredient commonly found in chewing gum and other sugar-free candies.
Yes, the alien sounding sweetener Xylitol not only provides an alternative to sugar but it’s a powerful ingredient for improving dental health as well. It is the main active ingredient in Spry toothpaste, a Xylitol based toothpaste.
What exactly is Xylitol?
Xylitol: How It Works
It’s sounds counter-intuitive that the natural sweetener Xylitol can improve dental health. Some people might also worry that they can’t have healthy teeth without fluoride. While we encourage everyone to utilize fluoride as a part of their oral care routine, Spry toothpaste can be a great alternative to fluoride for keeping your mouth clean.
Don’t worry, Xylitol is scientifically proven to improve dental health, making it a viable alternative to fluoride. Well, here’s a bit of the science behind how it works.
The cavity-causing beasties in your mouth need sugar to live. Xylitol is not a sugar but the bacteria eat it anyways. This causes interference in the bacteria’s cell activities, causing them to die off. Kind of hardcore right? So, with less of these beasties in your mouth, your teeth have the opportunity to regenerate and get clean again. The antibacterial properties extend to the gums as well. Your gum health will be improved by the actions of Xylitol.
Another interesting thing Xylitol does is it makes you salivate more. More saliva means your mouth becomes less acidic, which means a more hostile environment for those bacteria. Not only does Xylitol itself attack the bacteria but it makes the environment less friendly for them via increased salivation. This will be especially helpful to people with dry mouth problems!
The Spry Toothpaste Experience
Spry toothpaste comes in a very standard 4 oz. tube with a flip cap. It’s a totally solid white color with no additives. The cool mint taste is pretty low key; it doesn’t feel like it burns your tongue off like many mint toothpastes. The xylitol definitely makes the toothpaste taste sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It really is the same kind of sweetness you get from Xylitol-containing chewing gum.
After using the toothpaste, I noticed two big differences. The first is my teeth felt super smooth. It’s the same mouth feel I get right after I get done at the dentist. So, if you have problems with “fuzzy teeth” this toothpaste will definitely eliminate that feeling for you.
Another is the salivation. Xylitol definitely does increase salivation but not in a bad way. I’ve got a lot of problems with dry mouth, and this toothpaste is a godsend to me. My mouth felt a lot better after just one use of this toothpaste. I highly recommend this toothpaste to anyone with dry mouth problems.
Overall, Spry is a somewhat unique toothpaste experience. It’s a bit sweet, a bit minty, but it leaves the teeth feeling unusually shiny and smooth.
There are really only two negatives I could find in the Spry Toothpaste review. Both of them, however, can be alleviated with a little bit of extra effort and time.
The first is the price point of the toothpaste. You’ll notice that Spry Toothpaste is a tad bit more expensive than other options out there. In the end, it’s only a couple dollars every few months – we found that to be worth it. The toothpaste is effective and comes with a pleasant experience. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
Another negative is the construction of the toothpaste tube. I, along with some other users, noticed it’s somewhat flimsy. One user reported getting a hole in the tube halfway through using it. This is another problem with an easy fix. Don’t abuse and mangle the life out of the tube when it’s getting low. Just be a little bit more careful with the tube of toothpaste and you’ll be fine.
Spry Toothpaste Review Wrap Up
Who knew that a sugar (well, technically, a “sugar alcohol”) could be so beneficial to dental health? Xylitol provides a sweet alternative to fluoride. Its unique antibacterial properties prevent the buildup of plaque-forming microorganisms. It balances out the pH in your mouth to prevent new bacteria from forming.
Spry Toothpaste provides a fresh, clean mouth feel with a touch of sweetness. Again, my teeth felt extra smooth after using Spry. If you’ve got some unique problems such as “fuzzy teeth” or a dry mouth, Spry has you covered.
The only downsides to the toothpaste are price and tube construction. As we mentioned earlier, we really feel that the overall experience and effectiveness are worth the price. The tube constructions is regrettable but it doesn’t take away much from the value of the product. Spry Toothpaste is a high quality, excellent non-fluoride toothpaste that gives you a clean, spry smile.
