Have you ever had ‘the talk’ with a spouse or loved one? You know, the talk about how the toothpaste ‘should’ be squeezed? From the middle, the bottom, the top; who’s to say? Then there’s the issue of who’s to blame when the cap goes missing? Is anyone in charge of scrubbing the sink after the tube sat there, cap-less, oozing its innards? Mentadent Toothpast, claims to have a solution for these problems and more.
Mentadent Toothpaste claims to be easy to dispense and mess free. The company also promises a brighter, whiter smile which is noticeable in just 7 days. The box says the product contains baking soda and peroxide as well. If these claims seem like they are worth investigating, keep reading. Let’s take a look and see if it lives up to them.
Mentadent Key Features
First, let’s take a look at some of the features Mentadent claims make their product better than others.
Mentadent contains three protective and whitening ingredients: baking soda, fluoride and hydrogen peroxide. Most folks know fluoride plays a role in protecting teeth and is a dentist recommended ingredient (as well as being recommended by the American Dental Association). Peroxide works by introducing oxygen, which kills plaque forming bacteria. Baking soda or Sodium Bicarbonate is also proven to make toothpaste more effective. Studies show that toothpaste containing baking soda is better at removing plaque than alternative products that don’t use it. Baking soda has been shown to kill Streptococcus mutans, a bacteria which promotes cavities.
The package makes this claim. The next section will discuss the experience people have had using Mentadent and see if the toothpaste lives up to this claim.
3. Refreshing Taste
The packaging displays a ‘Refreshing Mint’ taste. No other flavor is available.
4. Convenient Refill Available
Refills are sold in groups of two or three. It is important to note that refill packs do not have the dispenser, so you will need one before you use the refill packs.
5. Easy, Clean and Convenient Dispenser
Mentadent occupies a smaller amount of precious bathroom counter real estate due to the fact that it stands upright. The product can be pumped out using only one hand. There is no need to squeeze, and no cap to replace. The product manufacturer says the toothpaste will not drip or leak from the dispenser and is more hygienic than the classic tube style.
The dispenser contains two chambers. When you press down on the pump, the two sides dispense evenly together on your toothbrush. The product only dispenses according to the pressure you place on the pump, so no extra toothpaste comes out and no mess occurs.
The Mentadent Toothpaste Experience
Mentadent Toothpaste sports some very interesting features, especially its own dispenser. Below we’ll take a look at the overall experience and see how it works.
No Film on Teeth
Having a gross film on your teeth is the worst, but unfortunately a lot of toothpastes leave you with one. Mentadent, unlike other toothpaste, doesn’t leave a film on your teeth after brushing at all. One reviewer mentioned a conversation she had with the dentist. Her dentist explained that some toothpaste formulations contain an ingredient which causes an allergic reaction that causes the film to form. The dentist recommended switching toothpaste until she found one that did not provoke her mouth to create the film.
White Teeth, Brighter Smile
Whitening is often times the hardest part of a toothpaste to gauge the experience on, so we’ve resorted to a few user reviews. Of that, there were some pretty positive things said. Several users said the toothpaste did indeed make their smile brighter. One user mentioned that her husband is a smoker, and the toothpaste made a major difference with his teeth. Another customer said her smile has never been brighter.
Long Term Users, Loyal Following
A large percentage of reviewers revealed they have used the product for years, some as long as 20 years or since the product was released. One user said, in jest, she was a member of the ‘Mentadent Cult’. The product appears to have a loyal following of repeat users, and that says a lot. People don’t go back to something they like – the fact that so many have returned to Mentadent year after year is a pretty big deal.
No Mess Dispenser
I’ll admit, the dispenser is pretty darned nice. Consumers have raved about how easy the dispenser is to use. One person, who is quadriplegic, said they use this toothpaste because the pump allows them to dispense the toothpaste with only one hand. Others have said they’ll never go back to using messy toothpaste tubes. You can not lose the cap on this dispenser and you’ll not have to deal with an ugly misshapen toothpaste tube again if you make Mentadent your toothpaste choice. One tube lasts a month for two adults. You might not get quite as much mileage from it as others, but the lower price of the refills will easily offset that.
Several reviewers said they like the taste, that it was pleasant, minty and ‘not too strong’. Unfortunately, mint is their only flavor. There’s nothing wrong with that, but gosh darn it’d be really nice to have a toothpaste other than mint for once!
Improves the Outcome of the Dental Checkup
Several users, especially longtime patrons claimed they have had positive experiences at the dentist office and believe it is due to using this toothpaste. Some claim they have had no cavities since they began using the toothpaste. One user said he had not been to the dentist in over two years and still had a ‘’perfect checkup at the dentist’s office.”
The biggest complaint was that it was hard to find Mentadent in brick and mortar stores anymore. Well over half of the reviewers said they could only find Mentadent online. They said it was not available locally, or the store where they once bought the product stopped carrying it.
The second most commonly mentioned downside is that you need the dispenser before you can use the refills. Reviewers cautioned others to save the dispenser once the toothpaste runs out, otherwise you will be looking for a new dispenser on your next purchase.
