We all want to have a whiter and brighter smile. Many of us, however, can’t afford the money, time and hassle of professional whitening treatments.
These treatments involve uncomfortable trays and harsh gels. They can even be damaging on the teeth.
Luckily, there are over the counter products which can lift stains from those of daily lattes you drink. One of them is Crest Pro Health.
Crest pro health is a two-step whitening toothpaste system. Step one is more or less a regular toothpaste while step two is a concentrated whitening solution. Let’s take a look at what’s inside of both step one and step two.
Before we do that, however, it’s worth understanding a little about how teeth get stained in the first place.
How Teeth Get Stained
There are two primary kinds of tooth stains: extrinsic and intrinsic.
- Extrinsic: These are stains that occur on the enamel or outermost layer of the teeth. This is by far the most common cause of tooth discoloration, and this is the one treated by Crest Pro Health. Some of the causes of extrinsic stains include the following:
- Sodas and other acidic drinks
- Various medications.
- Intrinsic: Intrinsic stains are deeper down, going all the way down into the dentin. These are typically caused by nerve damage or other more severe dental problems like cavities. If you have stains that won’t go away no matter what, these you either already know about or should see a dentist about.
It’s helpful to know about why teeth discoloration occurs in the first place and how it’s treated before looking at Crest Pro Health. Now, let’s look at how each step works in the whitening process.
Step One: “Purifying Cleanser”
The main difference between the step one toothpaste and normal paste is the inclusion of stannous fluoride. Stannous fluoride is a different molecule than the regular sodium fluoride in toothpaste. Crest has a patented formula for stannous fluoride called “Fluoristat.”
Some studies have shown it to be a superior to sodium fluoride in both preventing cavities and getting rid of gingivitis. While this is not directly relevant to whitening, it is good to have strong anti-cavity properties in the toothpaste. Whitening toothpastes can actually sometimes do more harm than good. More on this later.
The rest of the ingredients in the step one are the same as what you would find in any standard toothpaste. You have your usual mix of foaming agents, abrasives and flavorings.
Step Two: “Perfecting Gel”
The second step is where the real whitening power comes in. Every whitening toothpaste contains at least one whitening ingredient.
Crest Pro Health contains your common household disinfectant hydrogen peroxide. Most people don’t know that this chemical can actually whiten up your teeth.
Hydrogen peroxide works as a bleaching agent. It helps to life what are called “extrinsic stains.” These are stains on the surface of enamel and can actually be removed through whitening treatments.
So, now you know what the purpose of each step is and the key ingredient in each. What is Crest Pro Health Like? How well does it work?
How It Feels
The two-step program comes in a fancy box with a clear display. It’s pretty spiffed up compared to usual toothpaste boxes.
Interestingly, each step is in a differently designed tube. Step one is in a tube with an ergonomic flip cap. It’s really sturdy and secure.
Step two comes in a slimmer tube with a large pop out cap like a tube of lotion. I’m not sure why they come two different packages but it’s not a issue or a hassel.
The pastes themselves are pretty different. Step one is thinner more smoother. It feels less rough and quite minty as well.
Step two is definitely thicker; after all, it has “gel” in the name, Still, it’s not unpleasant and has a similar taste to step one.
Most importantly, the product actually works. No, it won’t drastically change the color of your teeth or make them bright white. It can, however, add a few shades of whiteness to your teeth, boosting your confidence and self esteem.
The main drawback to Crest Pro Health is that some people might have too high of expectations. They could have expected a dramatic change in the appearance of their teeth.
It’s fair to say that Crest Pro Health won’t create any miracles. This is true of all whitening toothpastes. The whitening ingredients are simply neither concentrated nor powerful enough to deliver the ideal results.
A potential problem specific to Crest Pro Health is the highly ironic possibility of staining. This is due to the stannous fluoride in step one. The product even carries a warning about how stannous fluoride could actually temporarily stain teeth. If one follows the directions on the product and rinses thoroughly after use, there’s nothing to worry about.
Still, some users noticed some staining due to the stannous fluoride and probably is not a good idea to have included it in step one, regardless of the benefits.

Crest Pro Health is an effective and easy whitening treatment. Choosing Crest Pro Health is not a bad idea nor is it a waste of money.
Even though it’s not going to transform your smile, it will help you feel better about your teeth and give some notable, if mild results.
Again, it’s worth keeping your expectations in check when using the toothpaste. Also, be sure to follow the directions on the paste or else you might end up getting more stains in the process.
