Mouthwash is an important supplement to one’s dental health regimen. It’s a great tool to help get rid of bad breath.
Some people suffer from particularly hard to get rid of cases of bad breath. They try everything. From tongue scrapers to a dozen different kinds of toothpastes, their problem persists. Luckily, there’s a mouthwash that might help alleviate some of their problems
While it might not be the magic bullet for your bad breath problems, CloSYS Chlorine Dioxide Mouthwash provides a unique alternative to the usual lineup of alcohol-containing mouthwashes. It’s premise is that uses a powerful alternative to alcohol to get at the source of bad breath and kill nasty odor causes bacteria.
Chlorine dioxide is a unique compound with powerful disinfectant properties. It can kill bacteria that are resistant to the effects of alcohol containing mouthwash.
It is commonly used to chlorinate drinking drinking water but in greater concentrations, can be used a disinfectant. It’s particularly strong at deodorizing.
Why would it make sense for chlorine dioxide to be effective in getting rid of bad breath? Because as a mouthwash, it directly attacks the source of bad breath.
Dental health scientists have only recently discovered the specific cause of bad breath. Bacteria living on the tongue give off “volatile sulfur compounds.” These bacteria are responsible for up to 95% of bad breath.
More specifically, these beasties seem to congregate on the very back of the tongue where it’s hardest to brush. Here’s where the mouthwash comes into the picture.
Chlorine dioxide’s unique oxidizing properties kill bacteria that other mouthwashes cannot. It even breaks down the sulfur compounds that are responsible for bad breath in the first place. It seems that gargling does more than just produce a funny sound.
So, we know this chemical is a powerful deodorizer and disinfectant. What is it like to use in a mouthwash?
CloSYS mouthwash comes in a fairly standard, white plastic bottle. The cap is really easy to screw off and remove. You don’t have to pinch the sides of the cap or press down hard to unscrew it.
Out of the bottle, the product itself is different than one expects; it’s a perfectly clear, pretty much odorless liquid. Usually mouthwashes, come in some sort of shade of bright green or blue. CloSYS tastes the way it looks.
It pretty much has no taste! I was pretty taken aback when I first tried it. It’s almost totally flavorless. What little taste there is isn’t unpleasant. It’s hard to describe but the flavor is pretty similar to purified or chlorinated water. Still, it’s not harsh on the mouth at all.
The mouthwash seemed to work. My mouth felt less filmy and grimy. My breath felt fresher and cleaner. It’s a little hard to tell with the lack of flavor but I tested with with a few (unlucky) people close to me and they noticed a definite reduction in bad breath.
Luckily, CloSYS was smart enough to include a small tube of “flavor booster” with every bottle. There’s a small packet of mint flavoring. You can add it to your daily rinse if desired.
Just like the mouthwash itself, the flavor booster is fairly mild and not overwhelming. It’s a pleasant spearmint flavor, similar to the taste of a spearmint toothpaste.
There are two primary drawbacks I found with CloSYS mouthwash. They are the cap and the lack of flavor.
I noticed the cap on the bottle is not childproof. While I don’t have any children, this could be a concern for those with young ones living in the household. Parents will want to store this product in an extra safe place.
The other main drawback to the mouthwash is the lack of flavor. Even though it works, I would have appreciated the addition of at least some flavor. Having to use an additional flavor booster is pretty inconvenient. Plus, it does not come with enough flavor boosters to last through an entire bottle of mouthwash.
Still, this is more of a personal preference. Some users see the lack of taste as a positive thing! I think it’s easier to tell that the mouthwash is working if there’s the feeling of minty freshness present as well.
