Before we go over the toothpastes, however, it’s good to know a little bit of basic braces care.
Tips for Brushing with Braces
Proper technique for brushing your teeth with braces is vital for your dental health. If you don’t brush the right way, you can increase your chance of stains, and this leads to extended time with braces on. Here are some general tips for brushing your teeth with braces on:
- Angle the brush and directly brush the brackets

- Brush all sides of your teeth, not just the front
- Use a lower abrasion teeth to better preserve your enamel
These are just a few general pointers for dealing with the particulars of brushing with braces. It’s important to take extra steps to care for your teeth with braces on.
The most important choice to make with caring for your braces is to choose the right toothpaste. Here’s the list of the top four toothpastes for braces that I’ve compiled.
Top 5 Toothpastes for Braces
Below we’ve got our suggestions for what we think are the five best toothpastes you can find for braces.
Fluocaril’s Toothpaste is one of the few special purpose pastes designed specifically for braces. And in my opinion, it’s the best one.
For starters, the toothpaste is made up of all natural ingredients. It’s surprising since being all natural comes at the cost of potency or effectiveness.
It doesn’t contain any sodium laureth sulfate. This is a foaming agent found in most toothpaste. So, at first, the toothpaste can actually be strange to use. It doesn’t foam that much at all and is a little thick in texture.
Aside from the different texture, this toothpaste is a potent choice for keeping teeth healthy with braces. It has a proprietary anti-bacterial formula for keeping germs at bay. These acid-generating germs are what cause a lot of the complications that come with wearing braces.
In addition, it’s very gentle on the enamel and contains a high amount of fluoride. Both of these factors combine to prevent the dreaded white spot stains that come after braces are removed.
It’s been proven to prevent these post-braces stains so it is worth using for this alone. It’s the best toothpaste for braces due to its purpose built formula and its potency. It’s simply one of the strongest non-prescription toothpastes for braces.
It might surprise you that a normal whitening toothpaste would make this list but hear me out. Supersmile’s paste is probably the highest quality whitening toothpaste available over the counter. Plus, it’s guaranteed effective for those with orthodontic appliances.
As I mentioned earlier, one of the biggest complications that comes with wearing braces is the staining that can come after wearing them. Supersmile has been reported to help lift these stains. How does it work?
Calprox is a unique, signature formula of the ingredient calcium peroxide, a common whitening ingredient. Usually, it’s combined with other materials such as silica and abrasives. These can cause damage to the tooth’s enamel. Supersmile’s formula removes all of those substances, making it much easier on your teeth.
As an added bonus, it’s surprising mild and easy on the mouth. It’s a refreshing minty flavor.
Compared to the Fluocaril, it doesn’t come with the full kit of anti-bacterial properties and whitening effect. It’s a good alternative if stains are your biggest worry. Also, don’t be concerned about the toothpaste whitening your teeth too much.
You won’t have an uneven whiteness when the braces eventually come off. Supersmile’s toothpaste only gets rid of minor surface stains.
This is one of the other purpose-built orthodontic toothpastes on my list. Unlike the Ortho123, it does contain SLS, so it feels more like a normal toothpaste. It foams up well and has a rather interesting texture.
This is probably due to the inclusion of two ingredients that are common in skin care products: allantoin and aloe vera.
How do these seemingly out-of-place ingredients help with braces? Well, allantoin helps with skin inflammation. This applies to the gums as well. If your braces make your gums flare up or more sensitive, allantoin may help soothe some of the soreness.
Aloe vera works the same way. It’s soothing and helps keep inflammation down. These are somewhat common problems for braces wearers.
Vitis’s toothpaste just comes in apple-mint flavor. It’s not as refreshing as a minty toothpaste but it still tastes quite good. A nice choice for those looking to help keep their braces clean and try a different flavor for their toothpaste as well.
I really enjoyed Vitis’s toothpaste’s flavor and texture. It’s really smooth and soothing on the teeth and gums. The apple-mint is a nice departure from the usual mint flavors.
I chose Arm & Hammer for a few reasons. First, like Supersmile’s toothpaste, it’s a whitening toothpaste. It helps tackle some of the common staining that comes with wearing braces.
Another reason I chose it was due to its use of baking soda. Baking soda is a really gentle abrasive. This fine powder can reach into the crevices and nooks and crannies of braces as well.
Thus, the toothpaste is very smooth and works around the braces rather nicely. The taste, however, is just not as pleasant as the other toothpastes. It tastes like baking soda with a hint of mint. Baking soda doesn’t taste offensive or unpleasant, it’s just not delicious either!
If you can get over the taste of baking soda, it’s a great choice for a toothpaste for braces. It uses baking soda to gently clean the enamel and get to tricky spots created by braces. It will get around the brackets and all the metal work to keep your smile white and healthy.
Overall, I like Arm and Hammer’s cleaning power. It really made my mouth feel clean and refreshed. I felt like the baking soda left my teeth and gums healthier after each brushing.
Another purpose built toothpaste for braces, this paste from GUM will help keep your teeth sparkling white after the braces come off.
This toothpaste uses a high concentration of fluoride to help remineralize the teeth. In addition, it uses silica as an abrasive to help scrub stains and plaque off of the enamel. Also, it contains aloe vera to help keep the associated inflammation down.
As it says in the name, it’s a rather thick and pasty gel. I found it take a little time to foam up due to the texture. Still, it does its job well and really gets between the brackets and under the wires.
It has a really nice and mild minty taste. It’s not overpowering at all and won’t cause any mouth burn. Usually, high fluoride toothpastes are rather harsh but this one isn’t as bad.
Despite the “orthodontics” in the name, I couldn’t really find any interesting or unique feature that makes this toothpaste superior for those with braces. There aren’t any special ingredients or formulations that make it a dealbreaker for those with braces.
Still, it’s high concentration of fluoride and formula make it a solid choice for those looking for a purpose-built toothpaste for braces.
Best Toothpaste for Braces Wrap Up
Braces are painful but usually necessary. They transform our teeth from crooked messes to perfect smiles. They require special care and extra attention.
The best way to ensure your teeth stay healthy with braces is choosing the right toothpaste. After reviewing the options available, I discovered the four best toothpastes for braces.
Fluocaril stood out as the top choice for orthodontic toothpaste. It has the right formula for braces wears. Supersmile is an excellent choice if stains are your biggest worry. In general, it’s one of the best whitening pastes money can buy.
The Vitis is an awesome toothpaste if you have sensitivity associated with wearing braces. It’s odd use of skin care ingredients actually help reduce gum inflammation and flare ups.
If you can’t find a purpose toothpaste, Arm and Hammer makes a great alternative. Their lineup of baking soda toothpastes, especially the Extreme Whitening Toothpaste, will help prevent the dreaded spotting that comes when the braces get taken off.
GUM rounds out my list as a surprisingly standard orthodontic toothpaste. It’s not a bad choice for a high-fluoride, braces built toothpaste.
Keeping your teeth clean with braces doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Choose the right toothpaste and when the wires come off, you’ll have beautiful teeth.
