Our Top Pick
5 Gum Peppermint Cobalt is a fantastic tasting sugar free option to help you kick bad breath in the gut. It’s cheap, it’s effective and it tastes/smells great. As such, it’s my #1 pick for the best bad breath gum right now.
One of the most embarrassing things someone can tell you is “Here, you need a piece of gum.”
Bad breath is humiliating and awkward. Most of the time, we can’t tell if we have bad breath ourselves. Someone else has to tell us leading to reddened cheeks and embarrassment.
Chewing gum does improve bad breath in the short term. While it will not cure bad breath, it will provide definite short term relief. Simply put, chewing gum doesn’t eliminate bad breath at the source.
There are definite things to consider when choosing a chewing gum for bad breath. Certain gums are better than others. Here are some considerations to make when choosing the proper chewing gum
First of all, choosing the right flavor is essential if you want to help reduce bad breath. Right away, you can forget about fruity flavored gums. These will do little to nothing to help cover up bad odors at all.
This leaves two simple choices for flavors: mint flavors or cinnamon flavors.
Wintergreen or peppermint might be better options than spearmint. Spearmint is milder and less strong smelling than either of these flavors.
Another good choice is cinnamon. It’s famously strong and harsh. While it might feel like it’s burning your mouth off, it does work well at covering up bad breath.
Another important consideration to make is the ingredient make up of the chewing gum. It is essential to choose sugar free gum. Not only are these better for your teeth but sugar actually contributes to the growth of bad breath causing bacteria. It’s vital to avoid sugar when considering which gum to use.

Other than that, there aren’t too many things to keep in mind when it comes to ingredients. Some users might prefer all natural or even vegan chewing gums over conventional mass market products. It just depends on what you want.
A Word About Xylitol
I live on the west coast and this type of gum is very popular. What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is an all natural, sugar free sweetener. It actually confers many dental health benefits. The dental benefits of Xylitol are both numerous and well studied. Most importantly, Xylitol disrupts a bacteria’s cellular processes
This means that the sweetener might help kill off the bacteria that’s responsible for bad breath in the first place. It’s worth thinking about when considering the best gum for bad breath.
Top 5 Chewing Gums for Bad Breath
Here is a list of the top five chewing gums for bad breath. I made these selections based on a few different factors.
I chose them based on the longevity of the flavor, the strength of the taste and other unique features.
I chose this flavor of 5 Gum for a few key reasons.
First of all, it’s definitely the best chewing gum you can find at your checkstand. The peppermint flavor is strong and mouth cleansing. These strips of gum last a long time.
The taste is very nice and not harsh at all. It’s strong and lasts much longer than other mass market gums like Orbit or Trident. It’s sugar free and contains no ingredients which might be a detriment to getting rid of bad breath.
The only “downside” of this gum is that they come in strips with individual wrappers. This means that if you’re prolific chewer like me, you might end up with a big pile of wrappers laying around.
Coming in at number two, Xlear’s Spry Gum gum sits at this spot for two specific reasons.
First, it is the best xylitol containing gum on the market. Again, xylitol is a natural sweetener which confers a host of dental health benefits. One of these can help get rid of bad breath causing bacteria.
Spry’s Xylitol Gum tastes great, akin to a piece of Juicy Fruit. It comes in cinnamon, “fresh fruit,” peppermint, spearmint and green tea. I tried all of five of their flavors. The peppermint flavors is the best in my opinion. It’s essential oil based so it is both natural tasting and longer lasting than some of the other flavors.
The only drawback I could find from Spry was that it lost its flavor a bit faster than the other brands. Still, it retains its flavor surprisingly well for a non-aspartame sweetened gum.
At number three, this Peelu co. gum is one of the best all natural gums on the market. It contains few ingredients. It’s great for those who are concerned at getting rid of bad breath and concerned about the ingredients in their chewing gum.
The gum base is made from natural peelu fibre. It’s really pliable and long lasting. The peppermint flavor is really natural tasting too. While it’s not as strong as the previous two gums, it’s long lasting and highly refreshing. It’s great for those who want a more natural taste to their mint gum.
The reason this gum is only at the number three slot is because of the texture of the coating, and the longevity. It’s kind of crumbly and not smooth like the Spry gum pieces. This probably due to the all natural ingredients.
The flavor is just not as long lasting as the other two gums. I’m not sure why this is but they just don’t have as potent of a flavor as the others perhaps.
If you want to get rid of morning breath and get energized, this is the gum for you.
Note: This gum contains caffeine.
I included this rather unique chewing gum from the Japanese company Lotte for a few reasons. First, it has a very potent menthol flavor. It really does a good job at getting rid of bad breath. It’s certainly potent.
Second, it’s got a pretty unique taste, not just due to the menthol. It’s sweet, almost fruity. It’s hard to describe.
The sole reason Lotte Black Black gum is not higher on my list is due to the caffeine content. This severely limits both the amount one can chew and when one can chew the gum. It’s not really a good gum to chew after a late night out or after a strong tasting dinner.
Simply Gum Cinnamon Natural Chewing Gum is a great, all natural gum with a real cinnamon taste. I found it to be the most effective cinnamon flavored gum out there. It does not taste like fiery Red Hots or Fireball Whiskey.
This has a real cinnamon taste. Plus, it’s completely natural and vegan. It doesn’t have any plastics or artificial gums. It’s not rubbery and really easy to chew.
It’s not higher on my list due to the strength and texture of the gum. Due to it’s completely natural contents, it’s got too soft of a texture. Also, the flavor is not as strong nor does it last as long for the same reasons.
Still, it’s probably the best cinnamon gum out there, and it does a good job of getting rid of bad breath.
The Best Gum for Bad Breath Wrap Up
Chewing gum is a great short term measure to get rid of bad breath. It’s important to think about which product really is the best gum for bad breath. Some are certainly better than others.
It’s critical to choose the right flavor and ingredients. Remember, sugar free is vital and xylitol might bring extra breath freshening power to your gum.
Also remember, chewing gum will not cure you of your bad breath problems. Proper dental hygiene and brushing regimens will help cure you of bad breath.
Simply put, you will need to find a long term solution to your bad breath problems along with chewing the right gum.
